McDonald’s Women's Super League Round 18

Strikers Claim Super League Crown

The Devonport Strikers hammered Riverside Olympic 8-0 on a weekend where their status as Super League Champions was confirmed. The Strikers produced a dominant display on a boggy Valley Road against the Roos on Saturday to move 12 points clear on top.

When South Hobart were held to a draw on Sunday by Glenorchy Knights, that gap became insurmountable and the Strikers could officially pop the champagne corks. The Strikers have been the dominant side in the WSL this season, remaining undefeated through the first 18 rounds and will now look to complete an undefeated season to go along with the League/Cup double that they have achieved.

Final Score

Devonport Strikers 8 (L.Foote 8’, W.Knight 14’ 26’ 48’, G.Sims 20’, D.Capel 46’, A.White 69’, A.Bidwell 81’)

Brown Brace Secure Knights Draw

A brace from Jemima Brown - including a stunning second - saw the Glenorchy Knights hold South Hobart to a 2-2 draw and officially end their title defence in the process. South were 10 minutes away from extending the defence at least one more week after Josi Mamic had restored their lead on the hour mark, before Brown cut inside and fired a rocket into the top corner of the net to secure a point for the Knights. The result means the Knights have now taken points from every other side in the league in their maiden WSL campaign.

Final Score

Glenorchy Knights 2 (J.Brown 31’ 82’)

South Hobart 2 (N.Moutsatsos 23’, J.Mamic 59’)

Second Half Surge Powers United Past Pirates

Launceston United fired in the second half and powered to a comfortable 5-0 victory over Taroona at FloorWorld Park. With the game locked at 0-0 at half time, thanks in no small part to another accomplished display in between the sticks from Izzy Ottavi for Taroona, United finally converted their scoring chances in the second 45 minutes to secure a big win. Five different players hit the back of the net for the hosts, as they showed the diverse scoring threat that the side possesses.

Final Score

Launceston United 5 (A.Otto 52’, I.Declerck 60’, L.Smith 68’, D.Gunton 75’, O.Smith 86’)
