$3m Lightwood Park Commitment Welcomed

Football Tasmania has welcomed Federal Labor’s $3 million commitment to upgrade facilities at Lightwood Park if elected to government.

Announced today by Julie Collins, the funding will allow further stages of the development currently underway to be built, giving the venue the best possible chance of being selected to host 2023 Women’s World Cup basecamps and improving football accessibility for women and girls.

Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said the upgrades would be a massive boost to football in Kingborough, particularly for women and girls.

“Kingborough Lions is one of Tasmania’s largest clubs, and has outgrown its home at Lightwood Park.” Mr Bulkeley said.

“The funding announced today adds to the commitment made by the State Government last year, and will mean that the full vision to transform Lightwood Park into a venue capable of accommodating all future players in this growing region can be realised. It will also allow high-level football matches, including A League and National Youth Teams, to be played at the venue in the future, benefiting both the club and the sport more broadly.’

“We thank Julie Collins and Labor for recognising the importance of community football, and the importance of upgrades which break down barriers for women and girls to enjoy our sport.

“The benefit this project will bring to the community is massive, and we call on all major parties to support it, as well as similar upgrades planned across the state.”
