<strong>A-League eyes on Tassie’s top youth talent</strong>

Some of Tassie’s top young players will share the spotlight when they play a curtain-raiser for Western United FC at Launceston’s UTAS Stadium on 17 February at 4:30pm.

Under 16 and 17 players were selected for the match, which will be played before Western United’s Isuzu UTE A-League fixture against Wellington Phoenix.

The 31 players were largely chosen from the 2006-born age group, which missed out on the Under 14 and Under 15 National Youth Championships due to COVID-19.

Two players have been chosen for each position, plus reserves, with the starting 11 for each side pitting the North and North-West against the South.

Football Tasmania’s Football Development Manager David Smith said: “With many of these players now forming part of the Statewide NPL, NPL Under 21 and Championship squads, we are excited to showcase the development of these players.

“This game is part of the broader plan for developing this age group, as we look to play a number of similar games throughout the season, including possible games against NPL teams during Cup Game rounds.

“We are also preparing them for an end of season overseas tour to Japan, to play senior high school and club academy teams.”

Glenorchy Knights Head NPL Coach James Sherman will be overseeing the program, working with Football Tasmania’s player development staff.

Four coaches who are currently working towards their B Licence accreditation will also work with the teams: Alistair Ollington (Devonport City), Alex Aylott (Launceston City); Tommy Fotak (New Town Eagles); and Matthew Hess (Kingborough Lions).
