Football Tasmania’s Refereeing Development Manager Nathan Coad says referees are important because they ensure the game is played fairly and player safety can be protected.
“We need referees to preserve the integrity of our competitions statewide, particularly across youth and social football. Having more referees will also reduce the strain that is currently placed on club volunteers,” he said.
“The best thing about refereeing is that you get the best seat in the house. You get to watch some of the best games in the world from a better spot than the front row of the stands. It’s so much closer to the action, you’re a part of that.”
People can also benefit from refereeing by gaining life skills that can be applied to all parts of life, as well as the places you can go and the people you get to meet, says Nathan.
“People should take up refereeing because it’s the best first job in the world or can be a great way to stay involved at the end of your playing career,” he said.
“Refereeing is a great way to get fit, because you don’t realise you’re working that hard or running that far - some of our referees can cover up to 12kms a game.”
