Calvert Departure Leaves Lions In Limbo

Once again the Kingborough Lions are on the search for a new coach midway through an NPL season, after Greg Calvert stepped down from his head coaching role after just 10 NPL Tasmania matches in charge. The decision comes following one of the sides poorest showings this year in a 4-0 loss to Launceston City on the weekend at Buckby Landrover Park.
Calvert, who replaced Mark Broadbent in charge at the end of the 2018 season guided the Lions to a 3-1-6 record through 10 matches of the season, and has the Lions currently sitting sixth on the NPL Tas ladder. The Lions released a brief statement announcing the departure, stating he had chosen to step down as NPL coach effective immediately, but declined to comment further on the matter. Their statement read “The Kingborough Lions United Football Club regrets to announce that Greg Calvert has left the club and stepped down from the role of 2019 NPL coach. “The club would like to thank Greg for his work in the NPL program. “The club will announce Greg’s replacement in due course and has no further comments on the matter.” With the Lions eliminated from the Lakoseljac Cup and facing a week off, they at least have a little time to find his replacement, but the scenario is becoming an all too familiar scenario the club has had to deal with. Whoever is named the successor will now be the Lions eight coach in the NPL TAS era in what has been revolving door down the years. Calvert was the man who was set to oversee a rebuild of the side, but it appears the reset switch is going to have to be hit yet again as the sleeping giants of Tasmanian Football try to find the leader to help fulfil their long held potential. The Lions next game is against South Hobart on May 19 at Darcy Street.
