Clarence Zebras Start Off With Cup Triumph

The Clarence Zebras kicked off their new era in the best possible manner, downing the Olympia Warriors 4-1 to claim the Summer Cup. A hat-trick from Zoe Nichols helped deliver the win for the new club, as they dominated the contest and completely controlled the second half in a powerful performance.

The Zebras took the lead on 14 minutes when Nichols picked the pocket of Haralampopoulos and crossed for Isabella Ferrier, who rolled home the opening goal into the bottom corner of the net.

Olympia responded quickly however after a rare mistake from Amelia Vanderniet, who allowed a low shot from the impossible angle from Innocent Michael to squeeze through her legs and into the back of the net.

But the Zebras were starting to take control of the game and a series of corners on the half hour mark would see them reclaim the lead. Georgia Burt swung it in and a deflection saw the ball fly up into the air, where the dangerous Nichols was lurking and she somehow managed to knee it home from between multiple bodies to make it 2-1.

Mia Cane should have provided the immediate response just a minute later, but she couldn't finish off Michael's strong build up work when she blazed a shot over from close range.

It meant it remained 2-1 at half time, with it all still to play for, but the Zebras would run riot in the second half and they completely bossed the contest from there on out.

In the 57th minute Jenna Farrow couldn't hold onto Louisa Marmion’s shot from the left and following up was Nichols who bagged her second of the day with a close range finish.

That made it 3-1, and that nearly became 4 when substitute Allie Berry fired just wide of the mark, beating Farrow to a lobbed through ball but just failing to convert.

They didn't have to wait much longer for it though, as a searing counter attack on 68 minutes secured the win. The Zebras turned defence into attack in the blink of an eye as Stalker and Nichols combined, with the Zebras striker finishing it off to claim the hat-trick and put the result beyond doubt.

From there the game rather petered out, as the Zebras cruised to the finish line to claim the first piece of silverware of the season.

Their defensive unit, led by Zara Dixon was imperious and they completely negated the usually dangerous Warriors attack, blanketing them in the second half. It was an ominous showing from the Zebras, who will enter the WSL season as the most red hot of favourites off the back of their showing in this tournament and with every chance to add more trophies to the new club's fresh cabinet.
