Football Tasmania’s McDonald’s Women’s Super League (WSL) will grow in 2026 with the addition of an eighth team.
Launceston City’s McDonald’s WSL place has been confirmed, after the club was granted a licence last year 12 months ahead of entry to the league.
The league will also welcome back the current seven clubs – Taroona, Kingborough Lions, Launceston United, Devonport City Strikers, South Hobart, Riverside Olympic and Glenorchy Knights.
Football Tasmania Chief Executive Officer Tony Pignata said he was thrilled to see the league increase to eight from just six teams in 2024, which allows for a 21-round competition and the removal of the bye round, a necessary feature of the seven-team 2025 league.
“We look forward to welcoming Launceston City to the Women’s Super League in 2026, so that we continue to grow and strengthen the league,” he said.
“This is good for the growth of our women’s game, and we hope the addition of another team will make for an interesting and exciting season, just as it did in 2024 when Riverside and Glenorchy Knights joined the league.
“We know it was challenging for our teams to maintain the momentum last season with a bye round on top of other competition breaks for Statewide Cup games or national tournaments, so this will certainly assist them to play more consistently at the top of their game.
“I look forward to the first WSL matches on the weekend of Friday, 13 March 2026.”
The men’s McDonald’s National Premier Leagues Tasmania competition was announced on September 18, with the eight current sides (Kingborough Lions, Launceston United, Launceston City, Devonport City Strikers, Clarence Zebras, South Hobart, Glenorchy Knights and Riverside Olympic) being joined by South East United and Ulverstone in 2026. Round 1 will begin on Friday 6 March.
