Five Tasmanian footballers selected for Junior Matildas
In the lead up to the host city announcement for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, five of Tasmania’s finest young female footballers have been identified as potential future Matildas.
Holly Bonertz-Benn, Kate Bonertz-Benn, Eloise Paine (all Kingborough Lions) Jessica McCallum-Smith (Launceston United) and Annalee Bidwell (Devonport Strikers) have been selected in the extended player squad for the Junior Matildas.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley praised the effort and commitment of each player, saying the future was bright for women’s football in Tasmania.
“Being selected to represent your country at any level is one of the greatest honours an athlete can receive,” Mr Bulkeley said.
“Football Tasmania is extremely proud that five of our most promising young players are in the mix for the Young Matildas and wish them the best as they put their best foot forward for selection.
“It’s also wonderful to see players from each major region of Tasmania represented, demonstrating the state-wide strength of female football and pointing to a bright future for the World Game for women and girls.
“This year, the Women’s Super League has expanded to seven teams becoming truly state-wide with the addition of Launceston United and we’re currently waiting to hear whether Launceston has been successful in its bid to host matches for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
“I’m sure all the players selected in the squad will be watching the World Cup host city announcement closely, and you never know, one of them might even have the honour of wearing the green and gold at UTAS Stadium in 2023.”
