Alanna has a PhD on “The Effects of Salivary Steroid Hormone Concentrations on Athletic Performance”
Females experience large monthly variations in their steroid hormones. In addition to their reproductive functions, steroid hormones also regulate numerous physical processes that have the potential to affect sports performance. It is important to know the potential impacts of how hormones relate to sporting performance in order to make informed choices when designing training programs, scheduling competition and testing, and making contraceptive choices.
The onus to change the way we look at and talk about menstruation and the impact of hormonal changes on the female athlete is on us. It is time to speak candidly about these aspects of being a female athlete.
The bottom line is that hormonal shifts that drive the menstrual cycle can affect multiple parts of the body, including muscle, bone, endurance, energy level and attention.
