Football Tasmania is very conscious that current natural and climatic events have caused a deterioration in the air quality across the State. Such conditions have resulted in conditions that may be uncomfortable, performance-limiting or even hazardous to participants in sport.
The Tasmanian Government provides information on air quality via its page at:
Smoke is made up of hundreds of different gases and small particles, also known as particulate matter or ‘PM’. PM 2.5 is the name given to the very small particles which can cause health problems. These are less than 2.5 micrometres in size, about 1/25 th the width of a human hair. The amount of PM 2.5 in the air is the best indicator of how much smoke is in the air.
Football Tasmania would recommend that should your club be planning to conduct, or are currently conducting, events/training/practice matches in the outdoors, you make decisions around risks associated with breathing during such events based on current information. If the PM2.5 number in your local area is greater than 25 then precautions may need to be considered to reduce or remove risks to health and well-being.
