Over 2000 junior footballers descended upon Hobart this weekend for the 2019 Ultra Football Hobart Cup.
The Hobart Cup is arguably the biggest team sport event in Tasmania, and once again it demonstrated why football is by far the most popular team sport to play in Tasmania.
The event, which was sponsored and made possible by the great support from Granville Harbour Wind Farm’s, showcased players from around the state in three days of nonstop football action. Games ran from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon and saw over 150 sides competing in age groups from Under 9’s to Under 18’s.

Teams came from all over the state to compete in the tournament, although results were not the priority for most sides, with fun and encouraging the young players to take the game on to develop their skills, the main objectives of the Cup.
The action was staged across six different venues Cornelian Bay, Domain Crossroads, KGV, Queens Walk, Warrior Park and Wentworth Park and all of them were awash with a sea of youngsters playing football for the next 72 hours, despite the at times inclement weather.

Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said the event was one that was a highlight on the annual calendar.
“The Hobart Cup is a great event and it’s always a big weekend on the Footballing Calendar. Seeing so many young players running around having fun playing our game is something we obviously love to see.”
He added that the continued success of the Hobart Cup proved that there was a dire need for infrastructure upgrades.
“We will have 2000 youngsters playing in this one event over the course of the weekend and the biggest challenge is finding enough grounds to host them all.
It really highlights that football is the sport of choice for young Tasmanians but in order to cater to them, and to facilitate any future growth we desperately need further investment into infrastructure.”
Bulkeley also thanked Tournament Director Victoria Morton for her work organising the event.
"Once again the Hobart Cup has been an enormous success and I congratulate Victoria Morton on a wonderful job in bringing it all together. Thank you also goes out to all the volunteers who made it possible, as well as the match officials who helped cover the massive number of games."

Granville Harbour Wind Farm’s Project Director Lyndon Frearson said they were thrilled to be part of one Tasmania’s largest sporting events:
“It’s great to see teams from across the State participating in what promises to be a fantastic event this weekend. Sporting events like this really bring the community together as well as providing an opportunity for young players to develop their match skills and experience playing in a large tournament.”
