It was a cold winters Saturday afternoon twilight clash at Lightwood tonight, and the Lions utilised their home advantage to storm home in a 7-2 thrashing down at the Den. There would be no Laura Davis in the starting eleven today but that didn't stop the Lions showing just how good their depth is without her.
The opening 15 minutes was full throttle attack from both sides, neither team wanted to defend, the focused was on getting quick goals. This open style of play from South gave Kingborough their first goal, as Emille Tatton made her way down the right wing and whipped in a lovely cross for Leila Hickman, who made no mistake and buried it into the left corner of the net.
In the 26th minute, the Lions would pounce on a defensive error by South and Zoe Horgan made her way down the left wing before picking out the bottom right corner beautifully. The clinical finishing on display from Kingborough was a sign of things to come.
A mere two minutes later Mia Cane would get amongst the goal fest, as she picked Georgia McMullen off her line and lobbed a ball which the keeper could only watch sail over her head.
In the 38th minute Kingborough scored their fourth goal through Emille Tatton, who picked up her brace with a shot from outside the box. The shot was hit with some power but it was one McMullen should have done better with.
Right before halftime and Horgan scored the Lions fifth goal of the day as she ran up the left wing once again and shot straight at goal. Unfortunately McMullen mishandled it and it slid into the back of the net.
The second half really began with some promise for South Hobart and their grit finally showed on the scoreboard in the 60th minute when Phoebe Djakic found Olivia Gardner off her line and produced a lob over her head and right into the net.
Six minutes later in the 66th minute, there was a real scramble in the box but Pishon Choi got it on her right boot and found the bottom left of the net to give South some real hope of possibly grabbing something out of this.
Kingborough extinguished that hope quickly when Zoe Horgan found space down the wing and scored an absolutely stunning goal. Her cross from out on the left wing, turned into a shot from the tightest angle and the ball soared into the top right corner. It was a well deserved hat-trick for the midfielder and a fantastic goal to get it.
Emille Tatton then finished the game after picking up a lovely through ball from Horgan, made no mistake drilling it home for the 7th and final goal of the game. The final whistle confirming a 7-2 win.
Kingborough coach Simon Edwards praised the performance saying "it was the response we needed after Monday, pleasing first half, girls showed resilience after conceding in second half, a credit to them, It's lovely to see the type of football these girls can put on and hopefully we can get more people in to see it"
