Important Cup Games Loom in Big Weekend

There is no shortage of exciting Cup footballing action taking place around this state this weekend, with the Summer Cup competitions reaching the crunch stage of the group phase and a pair of Lakoseljac Cup Qualifying Round games set to determine the final make up of the Round of 16. In the Lakoseljac Cup, there are games at either end of the State, both kicking off at 2:00pm. Up at Valley Road, Northern Rangers make their return to the competition after sitting out last season and they will meet Ulverstone in an all Northern affair. Rangers will go in as favourites having claimed the Northern Championship crown last season, but with no pre-season form line to gauge things off this round is always a bit of an unknown where anything can happen. In the South it will be a battle between South East United and Hobart United at Pembroke Park. Based off last years results you'd make Hobart United red hot favourites in this one, but with United losing a number of key players to NPL clubs over the off-season, combined with the departure of coach Andrew Brown that might not necessarily be the case, with South East tipped to be big improvers this year. Later on the Saturday there will be a Men's Summer Cup double header taking place at KGV, in what is sure to be a quality night of football with two big games back to back. First up, Glenorchy Knights will take on South Hobart at 6:00pm in a game that could well determine who meets Olympia in the Summer Cup final. With the Warriors having already booked their place by winning their first 3 games of the competition, the battle for second place looks to be between the Knights and South, with Saturday's clash likely to settle that. Then there is the first iteration of the new look Eastern Shore Derby that pits Clarence Zebras against Olympia F.C. Warriors at 8:15pm. With ticket sales helping out the National Bushfire Relief response, this is a great chance to catch an entertaining night of football whilst helping raise funds for a worthy cause. Ticket prices are Adults $6, Concession $3 and Children under 12 free. Olympia could well be playing in both of the March 14 deciders if their Women's team can claim the win on Sunday in the final round of the Women’s Summer cup group stage. They take on South Hobart at 12:30pm in what is essentially a Semi Final with the winner set to take out top spot in the group. Olympia will be expected to progress but South have already pulled off one upset with their win over the Lions a fortnight earlier. With the Clarence Zebras having already locked away top spot, they await the winners and have the bye in Group B. That leaves Taroona and University to fight it out for second spot, and with both having felt the full brunt of the Zebras in their opening games they will be eager to take the points in what appears a more winnable fixture for both sides.
