Kingborough Lions named Club Changer Club of the Month for volunteers

At the core of Kingborough Lions United Football Club (KLUFC) is a simple truth: the club runs because its community shows up.

KLUFC is Football Tasmania’s Club Changer Club of the Month for May, which focuses on the role of volunteers to coincide with National Volunteering Week (18-24 May).

While a small number of part‑time employees help keep operations moving, the overwhelming majority of the Club’s work is carried out by volunteers — nearly 200 of them have a dedicated role in the 2026 season, and many others contribute additional hours.

Club Registrar and Junior and Youth Program Manager Lorna Barrett said: “These volunteers form the backbone of KLUFC.

“They coach junior, youth and senior teams; manage squads; provide first aid; coordinate programs; and take on countless behind‑the‑scenes responsibilities that make football possible for hundreds of players.”

Lorna said that the commitment of the club’s volunteers extended far beyond the pitch.

“On any given weekend, you’ll find volunteers turning sausages at the BBQ, serving in the canteen, lending a hand at Working Bees, supporting social media and marketing efforts, or helping secure sponsorships,” she said.

“Volunteers make a community, and KLUFC is a great example of a community club.”
