A second half fightback has seen the Kingborough Lions claim a 3-2 win over Ulverstone at Lightwood Park in their Round 10 WSL clash. A brace from the exciting Holly Bonertz-Benn combined with a goal from star striker Laura Davis was enough for the Lions to overcome a 2-1 half time defecit after Reimer and Cropp had handed Ulverstone the early advantage.
Ulverstone took the lead early on through some nice play from Lucy Reimer. After running onto George's through ball, she turned onto her left in the area, nutmegging her marker in the process before sweeping home the goal.
Kingborough would respond through Holly Bonertz-Benn when she cracked a quality first time finish into the top corner after some good scrapping from her sister worked the ball to her at the top of the box.
But just before half time it was Eli Cropp who restored the visitors advantage. After storming through the middle and beating multiple defenders on her way, she worked it to Reimer, who was tackled, but the ball spilt to Cropp who finished off the move she had started to give her side a 2-1 lead at the break.
The Lions wasted little time drawing level again in the second half, with their talisman Davis delivering a goal of pure quality.
Tearing off down the left wing, Davis won the ball and cut inside to leave her defender in her wake before unleashing a ferocious shot that flew into the top corner leaving Anderson no chance. It was one of the goals of the season and buoyed the young Lions outfit.
It was 15 year old Holly Bonertz-Benn who would land the knockout blow, clearly filled with confidence from her first strike, she once again let fly from distance after a clearance landed at her feet 20 yards from goal. Her effort dipped down under the bar and slipped through the arms of Anderson, into the back of the net for what would prove the match winning goal.
The victory brings the Lions within 3 points of Ulverstone, who remain in third but the Lions have a game in hand in what is shaping as tight three way stoush for third between these two sides and South Hobart.
