McDonald’s NPL Tasmania Round 21

Burdon Brilliance Hands Knights Title

The Glenorchy Knights held the Devonport Strikers to a 0-0 draw to claim the 2024 NPL Tasmania title on a dramatic final day of the season. Needing just a point to claim the league title, it was Angus Burdon who made himself the hero, making a series of big saves to ensure his side held the Strikers at bay despite the Knights spending much of the contest on the back foot. The Strikers pushed hard late and twice drew massive stops from Burdon in a period of stoppage time that lasted 10 minutes but they just couldn't find a way past the inspired Knights shot-stopper and saw their bid for a three-peat fall agonisingly short. It ensured James Sherman the fairytale finish to his time at Knights, as he ended his time in charge of the team with a 2024 League/Cup double.

Morton Waves Farewell With Victory

South Hobart's legendary manager Ken Morton waved farewell with his side claiming a 2-1 victory over Launceston City in front of a big home crowd at D'arcy Street. With plenty of former greats of the club in attendance to bid farewell to Morton, City threatened to spoil the occasion when Thierry Swaby fired the visitors into a first-half lead. That coupled with some superb goalkeeping from Lachie Clark left South frustrated in a game they were in control of but trailing on the scoreboard. The goals eventually came in the second half however, ensuring a winning end to the most successful manager in the league's history. The win sees South finishing Morton's final season in second place, level on points with the Champions Knights, but missing out on the title due to goal difference.

South Hobart 2 (N.Morton 57’, R.Fellow og 75’)

Launceston City 1 (T.Swaby 16’)

Riverside End With Road Victory

Riverside Olympic concluded their 2024 campaign with a 1-0 win over the Clarence Zebras at Wentworth Park. A lone goal from Emmanuel Farias early in the second half was enough to secure the result, in a match that produced few clear-cut scoring chances, with most of the shots coming at the goalkeepers from long distances. The victory for the Roos sees them ending the season with 6 wins in total, an improvement on the 4 they chalked up in 2023 as they improved from 7th to 6th.

Lions Hit United For Six In Home Closer

The Kingborough Lions finished their season with a comfortable victory, as they accounted for Launceston United 6-1 at Lightwood Park. The Lions simply had too much firepower for the last-placed United to handle, as they raced to a 4-1 lead by half time with four different players hitting the back of the net. Noah Mies chimed in with a second-half brace to extend their advantage and see the Lions finishing in fourth spot on the table.
