The Girls NTC Challenge for 2018 will be held this week at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra. This event will see 136 of the most talented U17 female footballers represent their respective Federations against their peers from around the country.
The FFA Technical Study Group(TSG), which includes Gary Van Egmond (Future Matildas and Young Matildas Head Coach) and Rae Dower (Junior Matildas Head Coach), will also be in attendance to assess and identify future Westfield W-League and Westfield Matildas players.
Monday and Tuesday all Member Federations’ representative teams will play 3 games over the 2 days. Tasmania's Game are
-Monday vs Queensland (Tasmania 2 def. by Queensland 9)
-Tuesday morning vs Football West
-Tuesday afternoon vs South Australia
Wednesday will be a day of recovery with the players, the Member Federations Technical Directors and coaches attending presentations, workshops and clinics. Thursday there will be a play-off round between the 2 groups.
On Friday players will compete in mixed teams, composed on basis of TSG–evaluations. At the end of the event, a final presentation ceremony will recognise the most talented players per Member Federation.
Junior Matildas coach Rae Dower said the NTC Challenge would be important in her selection process for future squads.
“The way the Asian Championship cycle works out means this year is a pre-qualification year for the Junior and Young Matildas. That means we’re looking for players two years before an actual World Cup year.
“It’s the start of a new Youth World Cup cycle which means for Junior Matildas we’re looking at 14 and 15-year-olds to go away in September for a pre-qualification tournament.
“We’re looking to identify players who could come into a Junior Matildas set up, but for NTC a bulk of the players will be 16 or 17 which means potential identified for the next Young Matildas cycle and the Future Matildas program.”
Congratulations to all the players who have been picked.
