TASMANIANS are being urged to register for the 2024 football season, following a monumental year for Australian football with the success of the CommBank Matildas and Subway Socceroos.
The 2024 Play Football campaign aims to connect not only players of all ages and backgrounds to their local football club, but to encourage coaches, referees and volunteers to join up too.
With more than 38,000 Tasmanians - and over one and a half million Australians - involved in football across the nation, football is the number one team participation sport in the State and the country, and continues to grow.
Football proudly stands as the most diverse and inclusive sport in the country, catering to all regardless of ability, age, gender, race or religion.
CommBank Matildas forward Caitlin Foord explained the impact she hoped the FIFA Women’s World Cup would have: “It was incredible to have the Women’s World Cup here in Australia and see the way Australia embraced the team and supported football during the tournament.
“We hope that this has empowered Australians of all ages and backgrounds to find a home with their local club and play football for many years to come.”
Subway Socceroos winger Craig Goodwin reflected on his unique journey from grassroots football through to representing the nation.
“Grassroots football is the lifeblood of our sport and where my love of football began,” he said.
“I’ve been lucky to have football provide me with so many opportunities, taking me across the world and making lifelong friends – all of which was made possible from when I first kicked a ball at my local club. I hope as many people as possible can experience the love I have for the game, so get out there and sign up to your local club!”
Football Tasmania CEO Tony Pignata said the State needed more football infrastructure to cope with the expected influx of registrations this year.
“We’re confident that candidates of all political persuasions will see merit in our plans for three regional hubs across the State – a new home of football in the South, and expanded facilities in the North and North-West – to cater for all levels of football, from grassroots to elite,” he said.
