Season wraps with Valley Road double header

Tasmania’s top two sides cemented memorable double campaigns in winning style at Valley Road on Saturday (6 September, 2025).

On a celebratory afternoon, Devonport overcame nearest rivals South Hobart 1-0 to move to within one match of a second-straight unbeaten Women’s Super League season.

South Hobart’s men’s team responded by completing their own dominant double, overcoming Strikers 3-0 on the same pitch where they won the Lakoseljac Cup three months ago.

A stunning long-range strike from reigning league best and fairest Whitney Knight decided the clash of the top two in the WSL.

The result means Strikers have dropped just two points all season having won 16 of their 17 fixtures and need to avoid defeat in a rescheduled match on Wednesday to complete an invincible campaign.

“What a year!” said captain Georgia King as the league winners’ medals were handed out.

“I don’t think some of the girls really understand the success that we have created.

“We’re really proud of what we have achieved. It’s a fantastic feeling.”

Elsewhere in the WSL, Taroona won their first match on the final day of the roster season.

After losing 14 games straight, the bottom side built on back-to-back draws with a hard-earned 2-0 win at nearest rivals Riverside, Emily Funseth scoring in each half.

Launceston United landed their first win in two months, coming from behind to beat Glenorchy 3-2.

Eve Swan and Jemima Brown put the visitors ahead but Hollie Jones pulled one back before Nina Roy equalised late on and fellow sub Lucy Smith sealed victory in stoppage time.

A week after sealing their first NPL Tasmania title since 2017, South Hobart warmed up for national championship commitments with a comprehensive win against Devonport.

“It’s been a long journey - eight years so well due,” said captain Nick Morton.

“The hard work that we’ve put in over the last 12 months and before that has been absolutely incredible.”

North-West Coast product Adam Gorrie returned home to claim a brace before Eli Wright completed the win.

Second-placed Launceston City completed an impressive campaign with a ninth win out of 10, 2-1 at neighbours Riverside.

Toby Harrop gave Olympic an early lead but Thierry Swaby’s 28th goal of the campaign wiped it out before centre-back Daniel Latinovic netted for the second week running and Gedi Krusa was sent off.

Noah Mies ended a prolific season by taking his goal tally to 22 with a brace as Kingborough beat Clarence 4-1 to lock in third place.

Keenan Douce also conceded an own goal and Viktor Gordon headed in the fourth after Lachlan Burt’s sixth goal in seven games reduced the arrears.

Two late Henry Bain goals saw Glenorchy win 5-3 at Launceston United.

Yousuf Toure opened the scoring but the contest swung when home keeper Dan Nash was sent off for handling outside his area.

Riley Dillon’s quickfire brace and a Jacob Clothier penalty put Knights in control before Ramiro Cabeza Vilar and Toure’s seventh goal in 10 appearances leveled the scores.

Substitute Bain decided proceedings with goals in the 85th and 95th minutes.

Two postponed WSL fixtures remain to be played with Riverside taking on Devonport on Wednesday at 8.15pm before Launceston United host Taroona on Saturday at 12.15pm.
