University’s Thomas Roach has claimed the 2019 Vic Tuting Medal, polling a massive 30 votes to win from his nearest competitor, Kamata Hamaguchi of Taroona who was some 7 votes behind on 23 votes. Nelson’s William Stalker, Francis King Kenyi and New Town’s Samuel Leszczynski rounded out the rest of the top 5 in a count dominated by Roach.
In the Women’s Southern Championship, Olivia Young from University held off Mia Fujiura of Taroona to claim the medal by a single vote. Clare Edwads of Kingborough was outright third with a three way tie of Nina Daniel, Mich Tadros and Mia Cane sitting a vote further back.
There was a similarly close count in the Challenge League, which saw Sam Tooze, who also claimed the Golden Boot, beating out James Ackerley on 18 votes to 17.
In the Championship 1 Competition, Patrick Watts remarkably won the Best and Fairest on 16 votes, despite playing only six games for the season, polling 4 x 3 votes and 2 x 2 vote games. Portia Leung was the clear winner in the Women’s Championship 1, taking it out by 6 votes.
In other awards, Alfonso Giusti was crowned Championship referee of the year, whilst Matthew Westwood was the Young Referee of the year.
