Tasmanian sporting codes have teamed up to encourage people aged 12-17 to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Peak sports bodies Football Tasmania, Netball Tasmania, put out the call for young people to get their jabs before domestic borders open from December 15.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said vaccines were key to ensuring sports in Tasmania could enjoy full seasons next year.
“In 2020 we saw firsthand the impact COVID has on everyday life, including our sporting competitions which were delayed, shortened, or in some cases cancelled entirely,” Mr Bulkeley said.
“Many Tasmanian sports were fortunate to enjoy close to full seasons in 2021, which we know was very fortunate in a national context.
“We’re putting the call out to young Tasmanians to get vaccinated before the domestic border opens on December 15 to make sure all sports can play on uninterrupted in 2022.”
Netball Tasmania CEO Aaron Pidgeon said increased vaccination rates would ensure organised sport could provide maximum value to the community.
“Organised sport plays such an important role in the lives of many, and is proven to provide a vast array of physical, mental and social benefits,” Mr Pidgeon said.
“We’re calling on young Tasmanians to roll up their sleeves and get the jab so these benefits can continue to be available to all in the state, as well as to protect the more vulnerable in our society.”
