A THRILLING weekend of Statewide Cup finals culminated in two nail-biting senior games yesterday at Clennett’s Lightwood Park, Kingston.
In front of a crowd of 1,574 spectators rugged up against the cold, the Glenorchy Knights secured their place in the Round of 32 for the Australia Cup, with a 3-2 win over Kingborough Lions in extra time.
They were presented with the Lakoseljac Cup by Nerradine Lakoseljac, wife of the late Milan Lakoseljac, and son Jonnie. Winners’ medals were presented by the Opposition Leader, Labor member for Franklin Dean Winter.
The women’s final also went to extra time, in which Devonport City Strikers clinched the silverware with a 2-1 victory over Kingborough Lions. Their trophy was presented by Meg Webb MLC, Independent member for Nelson.

In the first game of the day, Clarence Zebras’ Under 21s defeated Devonport City Strikers 1-0 to lift the trophy, presented by Football Tasmania Board member Chris Brookwell.
The event also featured mini games by McDonald’s Half-Time Heroes from primary schools across the State.
On Saturday, the Under 17 Boys and Under 18 Girls contested their finals at Wentworth Park, Howrah, with Devonport City Strikers (2) defeating Launceston City (1), and Glenorchy Knights downing South Hobart 4-2 respectively.
They were presented with their trophies by Luke Edmunds MLC, Labor member for Pembroke, and Football Tasmania Board member Taylor Rand.
Football Tasmania Chief Executive Officer Tony Pignata thanked everyone who had taken part in the finals weekend as a spectator, player, official or special guest, especially those who had travelled from across the State to attend.
“What a weekend of football – we had terrific weather, excellent crowds and spectacular matches, which really showcased the passion Tasmanians have for our game,” he said.
“Congratulations to all of our players who represented the breadth of talent we have across the State, and everyone who turned out in droves to support them.”
