Being selected to represent your state at a national competition is one of the greatest honours a junior athlete can have, but unfortunately, not all talented players are able to participate due to the costs involved.
Football Tasmania is working to change that, launching a new fundraising initiative through the Australian Sports Foundation in an effort to make sure all players can compete if selected.
The fund is open to both the public and businesses and was kicked-off with a donation by Polyfoam Tasmania today.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said every Tasmanian player should have equal opportunity to reach the highest levels of the game, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
“As well as being an opportunity to experience a great trip with their teammates, the National Youth Championships are a part of Football Australia’s youth identification pathway, Mr Bulkeley said.
“We believe every Tasmanian child who is talented enough to be selected in a state team should have the opportunity to participate and put their best foot forward, but unfortunately financial barriers can come into play.
“Uniform, accommodation, flights, coaches, support staff & food costs can add up to over $2,500 per participant, which unfortunately not all families are in a position to afford.
“I’d like to thank Polyfoam for their support in changing this, and encourage other local businesses to sign up to this great cause which can make a real difference for young Tasmanians.”
Polyfoam Tasmanian Manager Greg Riley said the company, which manufactures polystyrene in Bridgewater, was proud to kick off the fundraising effort, calling for other local business to come on board.
“As a proud member of the Tasmanian community, Polyfoam is delighted to be able to support talented local kids follow their dreams and compete in the national championships,” Mr Riley said.
“As a manufacturer of a product which enables fresh Tasmanian produce to be exported to the mainland and beyond, we’re excited to potentially also play a part in helping the next Matilda or Socceroo get there to be recognised as well.”
