Tasmanian football legend to be inducted into Football Australia Hall of Fame

Football Tasmania has congratulated legendary Tasmanian football personality Walter Pless, who will be inducted into Football Australia’s Hall of Fame before today’s women’s international between the Matildas and Sweden at AAMI Park in Melbourne.

Mr Pless, who had a long and storied career as a player, then coach in Tasmania, is being inducted for his immense contribution to promoting the game through over 40 years as a football writer and photographer.

His media career has included 25 years writing for The Mercury, as well writing for national and international football publications. He has continued to cover the game tirelessly through his website1since retiring from full time work in 2009.

Football Tasmania President Bob Gordon said the induction solidified Mr Pless’ legend status in Tasmanian, and Australian football.

“It’s no secret that Walter is an absolute legend of Tasmanian football, and he is extremely deserving of this recognition,” Mr Gordon said.

“Whether it’s the statewide leagues, junior competitions, social, or anywhere in between, seeing Walter at the football and having a chat with him is dear to the hearts of so many Tasmanians involved in our sport.

“This is testament to his character, knowledge and love for the game, which just like his service to Tasmanian football, is unrivalled.

“Since retiring professionally, Walter has continued to tirelessly cover and promote the local game through his website, which has become somewhat of a bible for followers of Tasmanian football.

“The Tasmanian football community is extremely lucky to have Walter, and extremely proud that he has been recognised on the national stage.

“On behalf of Football Tasmania, and everyone who has been involved in the World Game in Tasmania, I would like to congratulate Walter for this outstanding achievement.”
