Ulverstone have produced a thrilling come from behind win against South Hobart at Darcy Street to continue their tilt at a Statewide Cup triumph. South Hobart opened the scoring through Pishon Choi in the 29th minute, with Choi doubling the home sides lead in the 54th. However, not long after Amy Bissett put Ulverstone back in the contest, with a 57th minute goal. Jazmin White then reminded everybody what she is capable off, scoring two goals in a minute to see her side clinch a classic come from behind victory. The game kicked off with both sides struggling to control possession, before Jazmin White produced a great run down the left wing. In the 9th minute South Hobart produced a great opportunity, with Niki Mousatsos producing a shot on goal. Six minutes later and it was Ulverstone with a brilliant chance, after a back pass was accidentally picked up by the keeper. This resulted in a free kick inside the box, but Georgia Foote hit the resulting set piece over the bar. The chances were flowing as in the 18th minute, Mousatsos played through Thapa with a great ball, however Thapa’s shot went just wide. Five minutes later Tiela Weeda hit a shot on target, before a Pishon Choi cross found its way to Mousatsos who forced Anderson into a good save. Approaching the half hour mark, Mary Coy was brought down South’s attacking half, giving the home side a free kick in a promising position. The ball was played in and it made its way through Ulverstone’s defence to a lurking Choi. Choi then got control of the ball, chipping it over Georgia Anderson and into the back of the net, putting South 1-0 up. Ulverstone then had a number of chances, in an attempt to get back into the contest. Amy Bissett hit a shot wide and then Jazmin White forced Louis to produce a great save. Just before the interval, Thapa almost doubled South’s lead, attempting to chip Anderson from distance, with her shot hitting the crossbar not once, but twice. This unlikely score line did not last long though, with Ulverstone soon hitting back. Their goal came in the 57th minute, with Amy Bissett finding herself through on goal. Louis soon came towards Bissett in the box, before the Ulverstone number 12 slid the ball past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net, seeing the score move to 2-1. Bronte Gadon produced consecutive chances for South to restore the 2 goal lead, almost putting her side 3-1 up and the missed opportunity proved to be costly with Ulverstone soon finding an equaliser. Three minutes after Gadon’s opportunities and two minutes of madness erupted at Darcy Street. She crossed the ball to Thapa whose shot was deflected away from the goal. Chances continued to fall to both sides, with Mousatsos, Bissett and White each having shots on goal. However, South’s best chance to equalise came in the 86thminute. Moutsatsos found herself over the dead ball, with a freekick at the top of the box. The South number 8 then whipped in the ball, with her cross very nearly sneaking into the goal at the back post. Jazmine White then squandered consecutive chances in the dying minutes, hitting the post and striking just wide before the referee blew the whistle, seeing the score remain 3-2 and Ulverstone confirming their place in the next round of the cup. Speaking post-match, South coach Craig Westwood was happy with his side’s performance saying, “to put a performance on like that against a good Ulverstone side is very pleasing”. He identified that his side did not have the edge to finish the game after suffering a number of defeats so far this year. Ulverstone coach Malcolm Gorrie was “very happy”. “It was a tough game and I think a three all draw would’ve been a good result”. He spoke of how both teams only had eleven players, resulting in tired legs for both sides. The win sees Ulverstone move on to the next round of the cup whilst South Hobart can depart the competition with their heads held high.
