Valley Road on the Elite Stage

Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley has welcomed Devonport Strikers’ home Australia Cup draw against A-League opposition Wellington Phoenix, saying the fixture sets the scene perfectly for more elite level football to be played at Valley Road.

“Devonport has been a standout performer in the national cup for a number of seasons now and after missing out last year due to COVID, drawing A-League opposition is a deserving reward,” Mr Bulkeley said.

“Valley Road has been undergoing significant upgrades in order to prepare the venue to be in the running to host Women’s World Cup basecamps thanks to funding from the Tasmanian Government.

“These upgrades also serve the purpose of setting Valley Road up to host elite level content in the future, as well as ensuring the venue is at the level it needs to be for the MyState Women’s Super League and McDonald’s NPL Tasmania competitions.

“It’s fantastic Devonport will be able to get the ball rolling on elite level football at Valley Road by welcoming Wellington Phoenix in a competitive international club fixture.

“We’re looking forward to a fantastic night in the cup, and hope this fixture is a sign of things to come for elite level football on the north-west coast.”
