In the second weekend of Women's Summer Cup action, the Clarence Zebras put in another dominant display as they thumped Taroona 8-0 to book their place in the Cup Final, where a likely match up with Olympia looms after they overcame Kingborough 2-0 at Olinda Grove.
Off the back of a 15-0 thumping of University a week prior, the Zebras once again made short work of their opponents racing to a 5-0 lead inside of the opening 20 minutes against Taroona. Rachel Gill fired in a brace, as did new signing Bronte Gadon, with fellow newcomer to the WSL title winning squad Zara Dixon also getting in on the act. Izzy Ferrier made it 6-0 by half time with another double figure victory looking squarely on the cards at that point. The Pirates were able to keep it closer in the second half though, restricting the rampant Zebras to just two more goals, coming via Danielle Kanegiesser and Taylor Rand, but an 8-0 final scoreline remains an emphatic statement from a Zebras side shaping as the most red hot of favourites to defend their WSL crown.
Their chief competition will likely come from the side who they pipped at the post last season in the form of the Olympia Warriors who ran out 2-0 victors over the Kingborough Lions in a rematch of the 2019 Summer Cup Final. After a surprise defeat to South Hobart the week earlier, the Lions were looking for a bounce back performance and they took it up to the Warriors in an arm wrestle of a first half. Both sides had their chances but couldn't convert as it headed to the sheds locked at 0-0. It was a former Lion who proved her old sides undoing in the second half, as Mia Cane stepped up to fire home a brace that would sink the Lions and put the Warriors on the path to defending their Summer Cup title. The Warriors will now play South Hobart in a quasi-semi final next weekend, with the winner set to meet the Zebras in the March 14th decider.
