It was dour and unspectacular for large chunks of the game, but the Olympia Warriors have eased into the Semi Finals of the Lakoseljac Cup with a 2-0 win over University at Warrior Park. Goals from Vandermey and Mearns secured the result as the Warriors look to once again win the competition they last claimed in the 2017 season.
The first fifteen minutes were a scrappy affair and they hinted at what was to come with neither side creating much, though possession was certainly more even in the opening exchanges than it would prove to be from the moment the Warriors hit the lead.
That came on 20 minutes when Jake Vandermey headed his side into the lead from Callum Brown's cross. A corner spilled out the back to Brown, and on his return to the starting XI he supplied a perfect cross for the big centre back to nod home.
He would also go on to setup the Warriors second half goal when he picked out Nick Mearns with a cross that a diving Mearns was able to bundle home and make it 2-0 just prior to the hour mark.
From there the game rather petered out, Olympia had no real need to be forcing the issue as they had the game under control with a two goal lead, whilst University simply couldn't win enough of the ball to pose any real questions back the other way.
Hill and Vandermey were utterly imperious leading the defence, whilst Mwarabu and Mearns dominated the midfield battle and allowed their side near total control of the match. Olympia threatened to add a third with substitute Mamic twice coming close, but it would end 2-0 and as the Warriors eased their way into the final four.
There they will play either South Hobart, Glenorchy Knights or Launceston City with the Semi Final draw to be held later this week.
