Warriors open title defence with win over Taroona

The Olympia Warriors have started their Women’s Super League title defence with a bang, downing Taroona 4-1 at Kelvedon Park. Up against a side in their first season back in the league, the defending champions flexed their muscles and cruised to a comfortable victory to open their campaign. Taroona defended well for the opening half an hour, locking down the attack from Innocent Michael and Meggie Goscombe. However, it was Goscombe who scored the first, as a scramble in the box ended with her getting the final touch. Olympia were forced into a change and brought on star striker Bonnie Davies, but it would be up-and-coming talent Mia Cane that would add a second goal. Cane capitalized on a defensive error and calmly shot from an acute angle to hit it into the bottom left corner, much to the dismay of Taroona goalkeeper Izzy Ottavi. Madi Chambers chimed in after some tidy lead-up play, getting onto the end of a Bonnie Davies cross inside the box with an open goal to shoot into. Mackenna Minstrell did manage to score a consolation goal late after a defensive error, but it just wasn't Taroona's day. They nearly made it two after a scramble in the box but were denied by some excellent saves from Olympia’s Monique Pinkiewicz. Olympia, with their first 3 points in the bank, will now have a bye in round two, while Taroona will hope to dust themselves off back at home against the Zebras.   Match report by Tanner Coad.
