Women's Statewide Cup Round of 16 Wrap

Heavy victories were the order of the day in the Women's Statewide Cup Round of 16 stage, with five of the six games settled by three goals or more. With South Hobart and Beachside already drawn through to the Quarter finals, six other sides have now joined them and did so in pretty dominant fashion. The Kingborough Lions showed now ill effects from their early start, hitting the road to Somerset and recording a resounding 7-0 win in the first game of the day. Holly Bonertz-Benn did the bulk of the damage, scoring a hat-trick in the second half as the Lions ran away with it. Earlier, Thais Perottoni chimed in with a brace whilst star striker Laura Davis also scored, along with Isabelle De Smit. That scoreline was replicated over at Wentworth Park, as the Clarence Zebras picked up where they left off in the Summer Cup, chalking up a big 7-0 win over Devonport. Despite the key additions of Georgia King and Lucy Foote, the Strikers were no match for what looks a fearsome squad that Clarence has assembled. The Zebras have an embarrassment of riches in attack and they underlined their diverse array of attacking options with six different goalscorers scoring the first six goals of the game, before Stacie Burdack claimed a second with the games final goal with one of the last kicks of the game. Both sides traded chances throughout the first half, but it was the Bees who were the sharper in taking them. A series of early corners failed to produce a breakthrough for Taroona and they were made to pay when former Launceston City attacker Lillian Shegog fired home. Second half goals from Zoe Lovell and Sophie Young then made sure of the win for a University side set to return to the Women's Super League in 2020. The game of the day was between two newcomers to the competition as Riverside played host to Metro FC at Windsor Park. And it was the visitors who stole the early lead and looked set to cause the upset as they led 2-0, before Meg Connolly inspired a fightback. Connolly scored four goals in a superb display to help her side rally back and claim a 5-3 victory to punch their ticket through to the Quarter Finals. Their cross town neighbors Northern Rangers will join them in that stage as they accounted for Launceston City 4-0. City have built their program back up after failing to field a side last season and would be pleased to just be out on the park again, but not so happy with the eventual defeat to their rivals Rangers. Braces from star player Febey Pearce and Abbie Chugg was enough to see them through. The omission of an injured Madi Chambers couldn't slow down the hosts, as goals from Inocent Michael and Mia Caine sent them into the half time sheds with a handy 2-0 lead. Speedster Bonnie Davies then added a third before the returning Olivia Bomford put the cherry on top of the cake with a trademark free kick as the game approached full time.
