2018: Round 5: University 0-5 Ulverstone

2018: Round 12: Ulverstone 5-0 University

2018: Round 19: Ulverstone 5-0 University

Two sides both looking to bounce back after opening round defeats clash on the coast as Ulverstone tackle University on Saturday. The sides haven't met since the 2018 season after University's relegation meant they didn't clash in 2019. A lot has changed since then and this is certainly not the same Ulverstone unit that was so dominant in that year, sweeping all before them and easily accounting for the Bees in all three games. Both lists have had significant turnovers since that year, and both will be fielding fairly youthful sides. Ulverstone were outclassed by Kingborough last weekend on their home patch but still have some quality in their lineup and will enter this one as the favourites. University hung in well against the Zebras for 45 minutes, but that Clarence side looks another to be on another level this season and it showed as they ran out heavy winners by full time. This is a much more winnable game for the Bees though but it will still be a tough road trip all the same and one their players may not be used to dealing with given their 2019 season in the Southern Championship.

First meeting

The title favorites head to Darcy Street and look to continue on their winning ways against South Hobart. The newly formed club looked every bit as advertised in the opening weekend of the season as they comfortably dealt with University. It was the sheer diversity of attacking threats that stood, as it did in the Summer Cup and is a big part of what has made them so formidable. The lineup is littered with goalscorers and their bench is filled with players who would be key players elsewhere. It's going to take something special to stop them, but South Hobart have added something special to their side this week in the form of Aimee Medwin. The former mini Matilda is the best player that Tasmania has produced in recent memory and should bolster a side that fought valiantly in a 1-0 loss to Olympia last week. After being decimated by injuries in 2019, we are getting a truer indication of this squads playing level this season and they loom as the competitions biggest improvers. Misty Olsen added plenty coming off the bench and with her introduction they outplayed the more fancied Warriors in the second half. If they can play like they did in the second half for a full 90 minutes, they could pose some problems for this Zebras side.

A battle at the Den between two sides who have frequently provided us with entertaining head to head matches in recent times. The Warriors may have swept their four Super League meetings last season, but the two of those clashes played at Lightwood Park were closely fought one goal games that went right down to the wire, whilst the Lions also had the last laugh in the Statewide Cup when they eliminated the Warriors in a pulsating semi final. We have seen great goals, late dram and generally games played with good attacking intent when they have met so hopefully we are in for another dose of that on Sunday. The Warriors produced a real Jekyl and Hyde show against South Hobart, bossing the first 45 minutes and looking capable of putting several goals past them, before finding themselves outplayed in the second half and only just holding on to win. Kingborough meanwhile had a rather impressive win over Ulverstone on the road, with Laura Davis bagging a brace to get her Golden Boot campaign off and running, whilst Kate Bonertz Benn stole the show with an absolute gem of a debut strike. This has the makings of a great game so do make sure you tune in catch the Live Stream of the game that Slice of Cheese will be running.
