Women's Super League Set For 2017: WNPL TAS On Horizon

Football Federation Tasmania is pleased to announce a full standalone version of the Women's Super League it set to be implemented for the 2017 season with a view of moving to a full WNPL TAS competition in 2018. The FFT Board is currently in discussions with Football Federation Australia’s General Manager of Women’s Football, Sarah Walsh, regarding eligibility requirements for clubs to participate in such a competition. For the 2017 season, the move will be made to the planned phase 2 of the Women’s Super League with eight clubs invited to participate, Clarence United, Hobart Zebras, Kingborough Lions, Launceston City, Olympia, Taroona, Ulverstone and University. The number of matches will depend on the final composition of the league, with the games to take place in the normal March to August competition period. In order to ensure that the clubs participating in 2017 are strong and have a chance to press for inclusion in the Women’s NPL in 2018, it has been decided each participating club must be is in a position to comfortably field two senior teams in 2017. This means each club will be required to have one team in the Women’s Super League and one in the underpinning Veto Northern or Southern Championship. “The Board of FFT has been looking very closely at Women’s Football and what competition structure would best facilitate sustainable growth for our best women players in Tasmania.” said FFT President Sean Collins “The implementation of the Super League, with a view to move to a WNPL TAS competition will provide an opportunity for the best female players in the state to improve by playing consistently, week in, week out at the highest level.” In addition FFT will be establishing a working group of female players to allow for the players to have a genuine input into the structure and support of the Women’s game in Tasmania.
