Football Federation Tasmania is pleased to announce that the full standalone version of the Women’s Super League will be taking flight in March 2017.
The Women’s Super League will involve north-west club Ulverstone Soccer Club, northern side Launceston City and six southern clubs - Clarence United, Hobart Zebras, Kingborough Lions, Olympia, Taroona, and University whom will compete in 21 Rounds for the 2017 Women’s Super League title.
The first round will kick off in Female Football Week, on the 17th of March weekend and continue through to August.
Football Federation Tasmania chief executive Mike Palmer said the FFT board and the Federation are thrilled to see the Super League take off.
“FFT are delighted that the PFD Women’s Super League will continue in 2017 and be expanded to 8 teams with the inclusion of Kingborough Lions. The pilot-season in 2016 gave a taste of what’s to come in 2017.
There is significant spotlight on women’s sport at the moment and football is part of this push towards the mainstream.
We have a passionate band of players in our female ranks and we are delighted to continue to provide opportunities for them to play at the top level in Tasmania. The FFT board and Federation see this as part of a continual progression towards enhancing all of the opportunities for female players to continue to develop and grow within this world-wide sport.”
Launceston City has welcomed the competitive league, with Caitlin Storay looking forward to playing matches against the southern clubs on a regular basis.
"It's great to see it continue this year, after it being a success last year. I'm really looking forward to watching women's football continue to develop in Tasmania.
The Super League definitely gives us opportunities and a pathway to get to where we want to be to be the best we can be. I'm excited to be playing quality opponents week in week out, to travel to Hobart to compete, and to see our local footballers challenge themselves." Storay shared.
The 2017 Women’s Super League roster will be finalised in the coming weeks.
