Women's World Cup Update

A Message from Football Tasmania CEO - Matt Bulkeley

Earlier this week I was privileged to represent the Tasmanian football community in a host city workshop for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. As you are aware the joint Australia and New Zealand bid was successful in their bid to host the 2023 event. Tasmania was a part of this bid and Launceston was put forward as the host city. The process now is somewhat of ‘a bid within a bid’, as each host city vies to be chosen by FIFA to host matches during the event. This led by each state government – in our case through Events Tasmania. Football Tasmania is obviously a key stakeholder and has been providing input along the way. Other stakeholders include City of Launceston, Tasmania Police, Launceston Airport and Visit Northern Tasmania. We had the opportunity to be part of this presentation which involved a video, as well as presentations on specific elements. I spoke about the legacy we see this event having on our sport here in Tasmania. Minister Sarah Courtney was a key part of the presentation and made a wonderful contribution. Mayor Albert Van Zetten spoke and Robert Groenowegen from York Stadium discussed the stadium aspect of the bid. I am pleased to let you know that our presentation was extremely well received by FIFA. They were impressed with what Launceston and our state more broadly has to offer. I believe they also understand that the legacy benefit to Tasmania is arguably much greater than many other parts of the country. The next step in the process will involve some more detailed workshops with each stadium, and in early 2021, FIFA representatives are due to visit Tasmania to inspect stadium, training and accommodation facilities. We’ll provide more information as we move through the process. Matt Bulkeley Chief Executive Officer Football Tasmania
