WSL second place battle heats up

MyState Women's Super League, round review | Saturday 28th / Sunday 29th August. With Clarence Zebras already celebrating their phenomenal early title win weeks ago, the battle for second place in the 2021 MyState Women's Super League is heating up. Last year's Champions, Olympia Warriors face stiff competition for second place in the form of Kingborough Lions and the two Northern newcomers Launceston United and Devonport Strikers with currently just a point between them. The Warriors had a bye last weekend so are ready to face Launceston United at home this weekend at the NTCA. Launceston United have been a force to reckon with in this, their inaugural season in the Women's Super League. They beat second-place contenders, Devonport Strikers last weekend at Valley Road in a defeat that may leave the Strikers scratching their heads in dismay. Jess Robinson, who has been dangerous all season netted the first goal for Launceston United in the 18th minute after a cross from Annika Reitsema to where she was waiting at the goalmouth to easily strike past George Anderson. Half Time Score: Devonport Strikers 1 (Mitchell 36’) – Launceston United 1 (Robinson 18’) The scoreline was even until the 80th minute when Danielle Gunton made a hopeful strike from distance, this would have usually been an easy task for the Devonport Keeper, George Anderson, but the ball bounced unexpectedly in front of her and over her head into the net for Launceston United to leave with the crucial 3 points. South have pulled out some surprises over the closing rounds of the league and Kingborough coach Simon Edwards would not have been impressed with this scoreline as the result has hampered their bid for the second-place spot. It looked good for the Lions after the pairing of Danielle Kannegeisser and Laura Davis have developed their goal-scoring chemistry throughout the season. Davis taking a well-timed assist from Kannegeisser to run forward and easily find the back of the net as we have seen her do so many times in the 11th minute of the game. [caption id="attachment_17451" align="aligncenter" width="663"] Kingborough's WSL Golden boot, Laura Davis. Picture: Solstice Digital[/caption] Sophie Westwood, who has been finding more of the back of the elusive net in recent times, equalised in the 18th Minute of the game, bringing her season tally to five goals. Westwood has scored in the last three games for South Hobart, finding some late-season form. Just before the halftime break, it was the goal-scoring duo of Kannegeisser and Davis again with some great passing and communication between them, causing them to weave easily through the South Hobart defence making it 2-1. Luck was running out for South Hobart as a corner taken by Kingborough met the fingertips of the South Hobart keeper, who pushed it backwards over her head. The goal was attributed to Amy Ollington, who took the corner. Half time 3 (Davis 11’, 38’, Ollington 42’) South Hobart 1 (Westwood 18’) It was early in the second half that South Hobart started their comeback. Pischon Choi with an optimistic strike towards the goal, again, meeting the fingertips of the keeper and tipping into the net. It was an almost exact replica of the goal from their Northern counterparts earlier at Valley Road. Choi continued her destruction in the 68th minute with a fortunate blast through a disorganised Kingborough defence to level the scores to 3-3. Picture: Solstice Digital[/caption] An astonishing hit from Holly Bonnertz-Benn after receiving a well-placed corner took the Lionesses back into the lead but that was to be countered again by South Hobart as Eve Swain, navigating a busy goal mouth, scrambled to fire. The scores were levelled to 4-4 in the final minute of the game. Full Time 4 (Davis 11’, 38’, Ollington 42’, H Bonnertz-Benn 80’ ) – South Hobart 4 (Westwood 18’, Choi 43’68’, Swain 89’) Elsewhere in Round 20, Clarence Zebras extended to a 24-point lead atop of the table with a 3-0 win over Taroona. Their lead is almost double the points of Olympia, who are currently in second on 25 points. Zoe Nichols is currently the WSL top goalscorer, having netted 24 for the season, followed by Kingborough’s Laura Davis on 21 and Clarence Zebras teammate Allie Berry on 16 goals. Tying third with Jazmin White who has netted 16 for Devonport Strikers.
