Football Tasmania has celebrated the achievement of Nathaniel Atkinson, who helped the Socceroos qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup by beating Peru this morning.
Atkinson, who started and played 90 minutes before being substituted, will be the first Tasmanian Socceroo to play at a FIFA World Cup if he makes the final squad to travel to Qatar in November.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley congratulated Atkinson, saying his achievements would inspire young Tasmanians to follow their footballing dreams.
“I’m sure I speak for all Tasmanians who braved the early start to watch this…
Launceston United claimed their first piece of Statewide Silverware since 1967 by downing the Kingborough Lions 3-1 in Monday’s Women’s Statewide Cup Final.
A brace from Laura Dickinson proved crucial in the victory as Dickinson struck just five minutes into the contest and then again midway through the second half to double her side’s lead. Danielle Kannegiesser provided a brief glimmer of hope for the Lions by pulling it back to 2-1 with 20 minutes to play, but that hope was quickly extinguished by Ellie La Monte who fired home a response five minutes later to secure the 3-1…
The Devonport Strikers proved too strong for South Hobart in the 2022 Lakoseljac Cup Final, storming to a 3-0 victory and in the process becoming the first side since South Hobart back in 2015 to successfully defend their Statewide Cup crown.
A brace from Roberto Fernandez Garrido, who would go on to be named Player of the Match, following Ali Dulleh’s opener right before halftime helped delivered the Silverware to the Strikers in a match they were pushed early on in, but simply ran out the stronger, comfortably overrunning South Hobart in a dominant second half. …
After the excitement of a Cup Final Long Weekend, we return to the league for Round 10 of the McDonalds NPL Tasmania. After the first few months of the season are intermittently broken up by Cup weekends, from here on out there are no more interruptions. It’s now a straight 12-week dash to the finishing line. Can anyone catch the Strikers?
Derby Under Friday Night Lights
The Round will begin at Windsor Park on Friday night with Riverside Olympic hosting Launceston City in the second Launceston Derby of the year.

In a week where Australia has qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Football Tasmania and MyState Bank are thrilled to be providing a free ball to every registered junior player in the state.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley and MyState Bank’s Managing Director & CEO Brett Morgan were at Wentworth Park on Thursday afternoon to deliver around 150 balls to Clarence Zebras players. Close to 9,000 balls will be delivered across the state.

The MyState Bank Women’s Super League returns for Round 10 and in a refreshing change we have a couple of Sunday fixtures this week. Those combined with the Friday Night NPL game helps spread the weekends top flight action out a bit which is good to see. I understand the logistical reasonings for why it has panned out the way it has this year, but having 7 NPL/WSL games all kicking off within a few hours of each other on a Saturday afternoon most weekends has been a tad frustrating for the consumer. It just seems a tad counterproductive to me in terms of promoting our top divisions. So, more…

Tassie's own Lauren Hargrave has has an amazing year - officiating at the A-League Women's Grand Final in March and her first international in April, when the Matildas faced New Zealand!
Now plying her trade from Canberra, we were lucky enough to enjoy her company over the McDonald's Statewide Cup weekend, when she was our guest 4th official for the McDonald's Women's Statewide Cup final and WSL Development Final.
FT's Olivia Clayton caught up with Lauren for a quick Q&A between games!
Round 10 of the NPL Tasmania is in the books as the sides returned to league action following the final weekend off for Cup Football in the 2022 season. Launceston City began the round by claiming Launceston Derby bragging rights with a late flurry of goals and the Lions ended it with a comfortable 4-0 win in the Safari Derby. In between those two clashes, the league’s title contenders took to the pitch as Devonport looked every bit the cream of the crop in their demolition job over Olympia and South Hobart emerged as the side best poised to challenge them as they vanquished Knights.
The MyState Bank Women’s Super League returned for Round 10 action and dished up two absolute drubbings and a thriller at Wentworth Park. With Launceton United off for the week, it was a chance for the chasing pack to gain some ground on the top side and they duly delivered, keeping up the pressure on the undefeated ladder leaders. Whilst Devonport and South Hobart cruised to massive victories that won’t live too long in the memory, the Clarence Zebras were made to work for a tough win over an improving Kingborough Lions outfit in an entertaining clash that was definitely the pick of the…
Round 11 in the MyState Bank Women’s Super League opens with an intriguing test for a title contendor on Friday night as the improving Lions take on South Hobart. Then on the Saturday Launceston United can take another step towards securing the title as they host the Devonport Strikers and the Clarence Zebras look to keep up their strong goal scoring form as they play Taroona.
Lions In Search of a Scalp Under Friday Night Lights
The Round will kick off on Friday Night at Clennett’s Lightwood Park as the Kingborough Lions take on South Hobart in what looms as a trickier…
The McDonald’s NPL Tasmania officially moves past the halfway mark of its 21 Round season this week as we reach Round 11. It kicks off with a rematch of one of the games of the year as the Lions host South Hobart on Friday night before a trio of fixtures on Saturday. There, the Knights will be looking to get their title bid back on track as they play the Zebras, Riverside and Olympia eye off a rare chance for points whilst Devonport look to maintain their dominance of a fierce Northern rivalry when they travel to Launceston City.
Welcome to the weekend washup for Round 11 on a weekend where Launceston United finally stumbled and their nearest title rivals both took full advantage by scoring thumping wins to close the gap and dial up the pressure on the ladder leaders. United still remains the league’s front runner and very much the team to beat, especially given they have the easiest fixture out of the top three sides left to play. Yet this will surely provide some heart for the sides trying to haul them in and it keeps things much tighter on the table.
Welcome to the Weekend Washup after an extremely eventful Round 11 of NPL Tasmania action. In a massive weekend the Strikers extended their lead on top and may now be uncatchable, the Lions secured a historic win over South, whilst the Warriors and Knights got what they both needed for very different reasons with respective 4-0 victories.
Before launching into the recaps, I want to address something of a pet peeve of mine that reared its head after the controversial City v Strikers game, specifically in relation to the non-goal on 32 minutes.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley has welcomed Devonport Strikers’ home Australia Cup draw against A-League opposition Wellington Phoenix, saying the fixture sets the scene perfectly for more elite level football to be played at Valley Road.
“Devonport has been a standout performer in the national cup for a number of seasons now and after missing out last year due to COVID, drawing A-League opposition is a deserving reward,” Mr Bulkeley said.
“Valley Road has been undergoing significant upgrades in order to prepare the venue to be in the running to host Women’s World Cup basecamps…
Welcome to the Friday Forecast for another week as hit Round 12 in the MyState Bank Women’s Super League season. The season really has flown by and it’s hard to believe we’ve already reached July. This is the point of the season where heavy pitches tend to impact games more and the physical toll it can take on the players playing on these surfaces is more pronounced. This where all those running sessions over Summer really start to pay off. They provide teams who have put in the hard yards over the off season with an additional edge.
Weclome to the Friday Forecast ahead of Round 12 of the McDonalds NPL Tasmania season.
The massive news of the week is of course the Australia Cup Draw. At long last it has finally happened; a Tasmanian side has drawn A-League opposition. In the ninth edition of the Competition (Formerly called the FFA Cup) we will finally get the scenario that has existed only in the realm of hypotheticals up till this point, with the Devonport Strikers drawn at home to take on the Wellington Phoenix. What’s more, unlike in previous years where that would’ve meant playing at a venue ill-suited…
Welcome to Weekend Washup for Round 12 as we reflect on a weekend where Launceston United extended their lead on top as the Strikers continue to shape the title race despite probably being out of it themselves. Having been held to a draw themselves by the Strikers a week prior, this week it was the side from the Portress doing Launceston United a favour by holding South Hobart to a 3-3 draw in an instant classic. Previewing the fixtures, it did seem like there would be two pretty comfortable wins and one tight match on the weekend slate and that’s precisely how it played out. Whilst it was a…
