The McDonalds NPL Tasmania returns for Round 5 after the Easter Long Weekend of Lakoseljac Cup Football produced a weekend of mixed fortunes for the NPL sides. Six of the eight have made it through to the quarterfinals, whilst Clarence Zebras and Launceston City found themselves bounced out.
The draw has already been made for the Quarter Finals, with games to be played on the weekend of 6-8 May. The headline act from the final eight will undoubtedly be the rematch of last season’s epic decider with the Devonport Strikers taking on…

The first stage of upgrades at Devonport’s Valley Road Ground have been opened, bringing the venue up to speed to host potential FIFA Women’s World Cup basecamps, as well as future A-League content.
Featuring refurbished club rooms and additional seating the upgrades were opened today by Minster Roger Jaensch, and were funded as part of the State Government’s $10 million commitment to improve four venues across the state.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley welcomed the speedy progress since funding was announced last year, calling on all major parties to support further funding for…
Football Tasmania has welcomed today’s announcement that a re-elected Morrison government will commit $1 million towards upgrades to Prospect Park.
The announcement, made by Liberal candidate for Lyons Susie Bower, all but guarantees a significant rejuvenation of Launceston City’s home ground can take place, following federal Labor’s $500,000 commitment made last month.
Both funding commitments are in addition to $1 million Tasmanian Government funding announced as part of the 2022 state election, and will go towards building new changerooms and additional club room and storage space…
Football Tasmania has welcomed Federal Labor’s $3 million commitment to upgrade facilities at Lightwood Park if elected to government.
Announced today by Julie Collins, the funding will allow further stages of the development currently underway to be built, giving the venue the best possible chance of being selected to host 2023 Women’s World Cup basecamps and improving football accessibility for women and girls.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said the upgrades would be a massive boost to football in Kingborough, particularly for women and girls.
In a big Round 5 of the McDonalds NPL Tasmania, the Devonport Strikers have moved top as they ground out a narrow win over South and saw one of their chief title rivals in Knights slipping up to City. Elsewhere Riverside broke their duck as they drew 1-1 with Clarence Zebras and the Lions hammered the Warriors 5-1 to round out the action on ANZAC Day.
Strikers Grind Out Crucial Win Over South
The Devonport Strikers have ascended to the top of the NPL Table after 5 rounds, edging out South Hobart 1-0 in a tightly fought contest at Valley Road. A solitary strike from…
Round 5 of the MyState Bank Women’s Super League is in the books. It was an interesting long weekend of action, where South Hobart secured a huge victory in a thriller at the Portress, Launceston United maintained their unbeaten start to the year and the Lions roared down at the Den.
South Survive Strikers Fightback
South Hobart survived a furious second-half rally from the Devonport Strikers to claim a massive 5-4 win in the first of the weekend’s fixtures as they moved up into second place on the table.
With South leading 4-0 at the halftime break, the game…
The Round gets underway with South Hobart looking to get their season back on track as they play host to Clarence Zebras at Darcy Street. Having dropped points in their past 3 fixtures, I would be expecting a fired-up South outfit for this one against a Zebras side who have proven themselves a tough side to beat so far in the league in 2022 but will still be big underdogs for this one.
Despite the lack of a win in their past 3, South aren’t playing bad football at the moment and they have played their 3 likely title…
The game of the round will take place at Darcy Street on Sunday as second placed South Hobart takes on third placed Clarence Zebras in a rematch of the Summer Cup Final.
South won that Cup Final 3-1 and they were the far better side on the day, fully deserving their victory. It was a rather flat performance from the Zebras and they then followed it up with a 3-1 loss to Launceston United in Round 1 of the WSL Season. For a team that won the league by 22 points last season, with a +44 superior goal difference to any other…
Round 6 was a weekend of pretty one-sided results in the McDonalds NPL Tasmania, as the title contenders flexed their muscles and all handily won in games they were expected to do so. Whilst last week’s Knights v City result showed that upsets can certainly happen in this competition, and that gap isn’t fully reflected on the ladder just yet, there is still what seems a pretty meaningful divide between the top sides and the rest of the league that exists, and it was on full display this weekend.
Football Tasmania Coach Developer Geoff Brown is one of 17 coaches from across the nation participating in a joint FIFA-Football Australia Coach Educators’ Development Pathway Program in Sydney this week.
Football Australia was one of five Member Associations selected by FIFA to run this pilot program, focusing on the development of home-grown coach educators through 150 hours of theory and practical learning linked to the fundamental coach educator’s competence, which will ultimately lead to graduates supporting Football Australia and Member Federations to develop more qualified coaches…
Round 6 of the MyState Bank Women’s Super League proved an interesting one as the weekend gave us multiple close games that were in the balance till very late on. South Hobart and Clarence Zebras produced a gripping arm-wrestle of a game where South perhaps announced themselves as the biggest threat to Launceston United by winning 2-0, whilst Taroona broke through for their first win of the season, downing Olympia 3-1 in a game that could’ve gone either way. The other game was not quite so close, as we saw Launceston United maintain their dominance of the competition, by shutting out a Lions…

Cup Final Rematch Headlines Lakoseljac Cup Quarters
The Quarter Final stage of the Lakoseljac Cup is headlined by a rematch of last season’s epic decider, with the Devonport Strikers returning to the scene of their third Cup triumph of the past six years, when they take on Glenorchy Knights at KGV.
The 2021 Men’s Season was in many ways defined by the incredible battle between Glenorchy Knights and the Devonport Strikers. The pair produced a truly memorable Lakoseljac Cup Final that went all the way to penalties and then arguably an even more dramatic title…
Football Tasmania has welcomed Federal Labor’s commitment last week to a facility upgrade at Tynwald Park if elected to govern.
The upgrades would include improvements to changing room facilities for the New Norfolk Panthers.
The Tynwald Park component forms part of a broader $5 million commitment to partner with the Derwent Valley Council to deliver the New Norfolk Sports Package.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said the promise came at the right time for football in New Norfolk, calling on all major parties to recognise its value.
Football Tasmania has welcomed today’s announcement by the Liberal Party that they will commit $480,000 towards upgrading Cardigan Street, home of the Somerset Sharks.
The announcement was made by Member for Braddon Gavin Pearce and will see the clubrooms and building extended if the Coalition forms government after the election.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley thanked Mr Pearce for recognising the need for improved football facilities on the north west coast.
“Football has a strong history on the north-west coast and I thank Gavin Pearce and the Liberal Party for recognising…
This weekend’s Women’s Super League fixture between Launceston United and Olympia Warriors will not go ahead, with Olympia regrettably unable to field a team.
Olympia advised Football Tasmania on Thursday of their inability to field a full squad due to injury and work commitments.
In line with competition rules, Football Tasmania has awarded Launceston United a 3-0 forfeit win for the fixture.
The Super League returns for Round 7 after a thrilling weekend of Statewide Cup Quarter Final action that saw the top four sides in the league taking each other on in a pair of cup classics. Those matches demonstrated just how slim the margins between the top sides are this season and really hammered home that we have an almightily interesting Super League season in prospect here with a wide-open title race.
We get more of that title race unfolding this weekend with Devonport and Clarence set to renew hostilities in a rematch of last week’s narrow 1-0 Strikers win in what will be…
