The NPL Tasmania returns for Round 7 after another weekend of Lakoseljac Cup action played out last weekend. After this weekend we will be at the 1/3 mark of the season, with everybody having played each other once with the exception of South Hobart and Launceston City, who still need to play a catch-up fixture for their postponed game earlier in the year. That represents a good enough sample size to gauge where the sides are at and how the season is set to play out from this point on. As it stands it would seem a case of whether any of the sides currently sitting beneath the Devonport…
Tasmania’s most played junior team sport is back in full swing across the state this weekend.
Pitches in the south will again welcome thousands of players, parents and spectators – all flocking to football matches in Under 5 to Under 12 ages in the Northern Suburbs, Eastern Region and Central Region associations.
In the north, players in the Western Schools Soccer Association will kick off their season, joining the Northern Tasmanian Junior Soccer Association and Devonport Junior Soccer Associations which both have their seasons underway.
The Clarence Zebras scored an important win over the Strikers in the game of Round 7 in the MyState Bank Women’ Super League whilst the Lions survived a scare in their Statewide Cup Quarter Final against Ulverstone in the other action taking place on the weekend after Olympia’s forfeit to Launceston United meant there were just the two games played.
Nichols Turns the Tables on Strikers
The Clarence Zebras reversed the score line of their Statewide Cup defeat a week earlier by turning the tables on the Devonport Strikers to win 1-0 in the lone Super League game for the…
Football Tasmania has welcomed today’s announcement by the Liberal Party that it will commit $3.5 million towards the redevelopment of Valley Road if elected after May 21.
Announced by Member for Braddon, Gavin Pearce, the funding would allow Devonport Strikers to complete Stage One of its redevelopment of Valley Road, including increased seating, lighting and pitch upgrades, as well as refurbished clubroom and kitchen facilities.
The funding would be in addition to the State Government funding committed to Valley Road to give the venue the best chance of being selected to host…
In Round 7 of the McDonalds NPL Tasmania the Glenochy Knights scored a huge win over the Lions to move into second place, the Strikers ground out another win over the Zebras, South Hobart cruised to victory at Windsor Park and some Gedi Krusa magic lifted Launceston City to a win over the Warriors. With the first full round of fixtures now complete, the question moving forward is clear, can anyone catch the Strikers given nodbody seems to be able to score on them?
Knights Hold Off Lions Rally
The Glenorchy Knights jumped past the Kingborough Lions back into second place on the table as…
This year’s McDonald’s Statewide Cup finals schedule is set to be a feast of football, with five finals taking place across two venues over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend (11-13 June).
On Saturday 11 June Launceston will host the best junior men’s talent in the state, with the NPL Development League Final (2.15pm) and the Men's Under 20 Statewide Cup Final (4.30pm) taking place at Windsor Park in Riverside.
All eyes will be on Clennett’s Lightwood Park on Monday 13 June, with the Kingston venue hosting a huge triple header of finals. The day will kick off…
The MyState Bank Women’s Super League returns for Round 8, with a full slate of games set to take place including a huge six-pointer in the title race.
Title Holders v Title Favourites at Wentworth Park
The Round kicks off at Midday on Saturday with a blockbuster fixture at Wentworth Park as the Clarence Zebras take on Launceston United. It’s the defending champions up against the early 2022 front runners in another ‘6 pointer’ that will go a long way to determining the direction of this year’s title race. The Zebras currently sit 9 points adrift of the United but they do have…
In Round 8 of the NPL Tasmania we have a pair of previews for next weekend’s Lakoseljac Cup Semi Finals, with both Semi Final fixtures set to play out in the league this weekend as South take on Olympia and Devonport host the Lions. Elsewhere we have a rematch of what was a highly entertaining game from Round 1 as City travel to the Zebras, and the Knights will be hoping for a chance to close the gap to the league-leading Strikers when they take on Riverside.
Cup Dress Rehearsal for South and Warriors
The afternoon kicks off at Darcy Street where South Hobart will be warm…
In Round 8 of the Super League, Launceston United inflicted a body blow on the defending Champion Clarence Zebras, maintaining their perfect start to the year and taking an enormous stride towards the title with a 5-4 win in the game of the year. Elsewhere Jazmin White raised the bat on a significant milestone at Valley Road as the Strikers routed the Lions and South Hobart had a nice goal differential boost as they smashed the Warriors.
United Fight Back To Score Enormous Win
When Georgia Burt put the ball in the back of the net early in the second half to extend the Clarence…
With the exception of Launceston City and the Clarence Zebras playing out a 1-1 draw, Round 8 produced a weekend of one-sided results across the McDonalds NPL Tasmania with 3 wins of over 4 goals or more. Two of those hidings were unsurprising with South Hobart and Glenorchy Knights winning heavily over Olympia and Riverside largely expected, but the margin of the Strikers win over the Lions certainly surprised. They were definitely the big winners out of the weekend’s action and as the league pauses for Semi Final weekend in the Lakoseljac Cup, there is an increasing sense that they are…
As we reach the final weekend in May we arrive at the Semi Final stage of the Lakoseljac and Women’s Statewide Cup competitions.
In the Lakoseljac Cup it will be Devonport taking on Kingborough and South Hobart up against Olympia. In the Women’s Statewide Cup, Taroona host Launceston United and Devonport travel to Kingborough. On paper, there are four clear favourites for these matches. In fact, I can’t recall a Semi-Final weekend where we will enter each of the 4 games with such overwhelming expectations over which of the sides will…
The Statewide Cup Finals are officially set. In the Lakoseljac Cup it will be Devonport taking on South Hobart and in the Women’s, Statewide Cup Kingborough will play Launceston United. That follows a closer than expected Semi Final weekend of Football as by large the Cup clashes proved far tighter than recent league games between the participating sides had. It even saw a stunning reversal from the Lions Women’s side, defeating a Strikers side that had vanquished them 7-1 just a week earlier and earning them the chance to play in a Cup Final that will be hosted at their home venue of…
On behalf of the football community, Football Tasmania would like to pass on our condolences to the family and friends of Brian Roberts, Life Member, who sadly passed away last weekend.

The MyState Bank Women’s Super League is back for Round 9 with a top of the table blockbuster headlining its return. Launceston United and South Hobart produced a thrilling Cup Quarter final a few weeks back and they now meet with top spot in the Super League on the line. It promises to be a gripping encounter. Elsewhere the Clarence Zebras will look to pick themselves off the canvas and start trying to haul in the leaders as they take on Olympia, whilst Taroona and Devonport look to brush off their Cup disappointments from last weekend when they meet at Kelvedon Park. …
The McDonalds NPL Tasmania returns for Round 9 action after a week off for the Cup Semi Finals. With another week off scheduled next weekend for the Cup Finals, it’s a slightly stuttering part of the schedule, before the back half of the season becomes less disrupted and will be 12 game sprint to the finish. With Knights and Devonport set to clash this week for the second time this year, who leads out in that dash to the finish will be determined this weekend.
Warriors and Zebras Search For Spark Under Friday Night Lights
The Round will begin with a rare Friday night game, as the…
Round 9 of the MyState Bank Women’s Super League was highlighted by Launceston United scoring a massive 4-2 victory over South Hobart to open up a six-point lead atop the table. In the five full seasons of the Super League that we have had run to date, the side leading at this point of the season has won it 4 of those times. Further to that, every side who has had a multiple game lead at this point of the season as United now do, has gone on to win the title. Only the 2019 Zebras were able to overhaul a league leader in the back half of the season and they were within 3 points of Olympia at…
With 9 Rounds of the NPL Tasmania season now completed following the weekend’s action, the Devonport Strikers have opened up a five point gap atop the table courtesy of their stunning come from behind win over the Glenorchy Knights on Saturday. In the space of a minute the entire trajectory of the season shifted dramatically and whilst there is still a lot of football to be played, this does feel like an enormous blow that has been landed by the boys from the Portress. Elsewhere the Lions narrowly escaped a spirited performance from Riverside to win late on, the Zebras continued their Derby…
Football Tasmania has changed the venue for this Monday’s statewide cup finals to mitigate the impact of expected wild weather.
Originally scheduled to be played at Lightwood Park in Kingston, the Women’s Statewide Cup Final, Men’s Lakoseljac Cup Final and WSL Development League Final will now be played on KGV’s artificial surface.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said the decision was made to ensure the quality of football was not affected by expected inclement weather, as well as to protect the Lightwood Park pitch.
“Given the rain that has fallen in recent days, and what is…
Statewide Cup Final’s Day is upon us as we reach the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend. It’s a massive weekend on the Tasmanian Football calendar and usually an annual highlight. With a pair of fascinating Finals set to play out on Monday, this year should be no different.
We return to the traditional host facility of KGV for the games this year after the wild weather we’ve experienced lately forced a switch back from plans to stage the day at Lightwood Park. It draws into sharp focus the manifestly inadequate facilities…
