Fresh off claiming a big 3-1 win over the defending Champion Clarence Zebras, the big tests just keep on coming for Launceston United as they travel down to D’Arcy street to take on the red hot South Hobart in Round 2’s marquee matchup in the MyState Bank Women’s Super League.
It shapes as an early clash of contenders as the Summer Cup Champions play host to a United side who will be riding high after last weekend’s strong opening act. It was an impressive first-up display from Launceston United, although it did come at a…
Launceston United you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention! Talk about an opening statement from the Northerners in this first fortnight of season 2022. Not content with knocking off the defending Champion Clarence Zebras in Round 1. They have now gone down the highway and completely outplayed the Summer Cup Champions South Hobart on their home patch to secure a second successive 3-1 win. Making it 2 big wins from what were 2 difficult fixtures to start the season.
As was the case last week, this wasn’t a smash and grab take your…
In the first big clash of title favourites for the season, it’s the Glenorchy Knights who have drawn first blood, as they scrapped their way to a determined 1-0 win over the Devonport Strikers at Valley Road. Any fears surrounding the Knights potential drop off in defence following the departures of Hart, Hill and Harrison have been quickly shot down, as they registered a clean sheet to ensure they returned South sitting in the position that they occupied after 21 Rounds last season. It makes it 7 consecutive clean sheets in the NPL TAS dating back to last season…
An A-League curtain-raiser at UTAS Stadium and a jam-packed Easter long weekend of football action are among the highlights of the next round of McDonald’s statewide cup fixtures released today by Football Tasmania.
All eyes will be on Hobart United and Launceston City as they face off in the Lakoseljac Cup Round of 16 fixture at 1pm on Saturday 16 April at UTAS Stadium in the lead up to Western United hosting Perth Glory in the A-League Men’s.
Seven other fixtures take place across Saturday 16th and Monday 18th in the Lakoseljac Cup, with an intriguing mix of clashes between…
Football Tasmania has celebrated the debut Socceroo cap of Tasmanian player Nathaniel Atkinson, who played a full 90 minutes in this morning’s 1-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia.
Atkinson, who started his football with Riverside Olympic before joining the Football Tasmania NTC program and eventually moving interstate, becomes the first Tasmanian Socceroo since Dominic Longo in 1998.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley paid tribute to Atkinson’s achievement, saying it showed aspiring Tasmanian players what was possible with hard work and determination.
Welcome to the Friday Forecast for another week. I’ve opted to combine the NPL TAS and Super League previews into one piece this weekend due to the postponement of games meaning we just have the four fixtures between the two competitions as it stands.
It didn’t take long for the 2022 season to feel the impacts of the pandemic, with Round 2 seeing the first postponed game when South Hobart v Launceston City was called off and we now have a second consecutive week set to be impacted by postponements. Taroona v South Hobart in the WSL and…
Launceston City wasted no time in making their mark in the first Launceston Derby of the season, scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes to set up a resounding 4-0 win over Riverside Olympic and claim local bragging rights.
This one was all but over very early on in proceedings as City took advantage of some early fortune when a misplaced clearance fell to Daniel Smith all alone at the back post who fired home the opener 8 minutes in. The second came just 2 minutes later and was a lovely piece of skill from Jarrod Linger, who…
Tasmania’s most talented female footballers have been selected to represent their state.
A Tasmanian-select team will play against Western United Women’s Development Squad at UTAS Stadium on Tuesday 19 April, with the match to be followed by the A-League Men’s fixture between Western United and Macarthur FC.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley congratulated all selected players, saying it was a wonderful opportunity for them to represent their state and potentially open opportunities to play at a higher level.
“Being selected to represent your state a huge achievement and I…
Football Tasmania has welcomed today’s commitment by Federal Labor to build two full-size pitches, lighting, clubrooms and additional facilities at Seymour Street in Brighton if elected next month.
The football component forms part of Labor’s $2.3 million commitment towards the Seymour Street Masterplan, which also includes a number of complementary community infrastructure initiatives.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said the funding would provide a massive boost to football in the fast-growing Brighton region.
“We’ve seen steady growth in participation in Brighton for a number…
The NPL Tasmania continues with Round 4 action and for the time being, we have a full slate of games. Let’s hope that remains the case and we can get through the weekend without a Covid interruption after the past fortnight was disrupted.
South Host Lions in Summer Cup Final Rematch
The round gets underway at Darcy Street on Saturday afternoon with South Hobart taking on the Kingborough Lions in a rematch of the Summer Cup Final. South Hobart won that clash 1-0, in a game that was in stark contrast to South’s 1-1 draw with Knight’s last weekend, producing a…
After what basically amounted to a bye week in Round 3 with all 3 games being postponed, the Women’s Super League makes its return for Round 4 with a full slate of games currently set to go at the time of writing this. This season may well turn into a battle of attrition, with packed schedules later in the season to play those catch-up games set to test sides’ fitness levels out, but for now, most sides should be feeling fresh for what looms as an intriguing weekend of fixtures.
Football Tasmania has celebrated the achievement of Tasmanian referee Lauren Hargrave who has been selected to make her international debut this evening.
Ms Hargrave will run the line as an assistant referee in tonight’s fixture between the Matildas and New Zealand.
She is the second Tasmanian to make an international footballing debut in as many weeks, following Nathaniel Atkinson’s first cap for the Socceroos against Saudi Arabia.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said Ms Hargrave’s selection was the latest in a line of many achievements for the trailblazing referee.
At Darcy Street, Josh Divin produced one of the best individual displays you’re likely to see all year, scoring four times as South Hobart struck back from a 4-2 deficit to claim a 4-4 draw with the Kingborough Lions in the game of the season to date. In an open encounter where the scoring chances flowed from start to finish, Divin produced a simply magical performance to ensure his side claimed a share of the spoils after Noah Mies had earlier threatened to fire the Lions to an upset victory.
Mies struck in just the third minute of the game, with some…
A four-goal haul from Bonnie Davies sent South Hobart on their way to a comfortable win over the Kingborough Lions in a goal-filled clash at Darcy Street. Davies proved too much to handle as she helped fire her side to a 7-1 lead before the Lions struck back with some late consolation goals to bring some respectability to the final score in a game that ended 7-4.
South had the result well within their keeping from early on, scoring three times in a five-minute burst between the 20thand 25th minute mark of the first half. Pichon Choi opened the scoring with a…
The Easter long weekend brings with it its usual bevy of Cup Football action with games scheduled around the state across the weekend. There is nothing else in the sport quite like Cup football. Whilst over the course of an entire season the strongest sides will usually always win out, in a one-off sudden death game the underdogs can often prevail. A little bit of luck, a slightly off day from the favourites, or an inspired performance from the underdog can all lead to some shock results and it’s the unpredictable nature of this competition that…
Football Tasmania has welcomed today’s announcement that a re-elected Morrison government will commit $2.3 million towards upgrades to Seymour St Park.
The announcement, made by Liberal candidate for Lyons Susie Bower, guarantees a significant rejuvenation of Brighton Storm’s home ground can take place, following federal Labor’s commitment of the same amount made last month.
This commitment will allow the construction of two full-size pitches, lighting, clubrooms and additional facilities at Seymour Street in Brighton if elected next month.
The MyState Bank Women’s Super League returns for Round 5 after a weekend off for the majority of the sides due to the Cup games over Easter, though not the top players at each club, with many of them involved in Monday’s State game against Western United.
I thought the players involved in that fixture did a terrific job to get a draw against a high-quality opposition filled with players who will be pushing to be in the A-League Women’s competition next season. There were certainly some tired bodies at the end of it, but they fought hard to grind out the…
