Football Tasmania is excited to launch two new Tasmanian youth football leagues to increase development opportunities for talented players.
The WSL & NPL Development Leagues, for Under 15 female players and Under 17 male players respectively, aim to help talented players to reach the highest levels of the World Game both in the state and further abroad.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said the competitions were designed to increase opportunities for talented young players to play more games against the best opponents in the state.
NPL/WSL double-headers, Friday night fixtures and ‘home days’ featuring multiple teams from the same club playing back-to-back are among the highlights of this season’s NPL and WSL fixtures, released by Football Tasmania today.
15 teams from 10 clubs will compete in 147 matches across the 21-round MyState Bank Women’s Super League (WSL) and McDonald’s National Premier Leagues Tasmania (NPL) this season, all aiming to be crowned the best team in the state.
A COVID back-up round has been implemented to minimise interruptions to rosters if matches need to be postponed.
Football Tasmania has welcomed the appointment of Nic Street as Minister for Sport and Recreation, also paying tribute to outgoing Minister Jane Howlett.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said Minister Howlett had contributed greatly to the growth of football over the past two years.
“Minister Howlett has been a tremendous advocate for football in Tasmania and we thank her for supporting the growth of Tasmania’s most played team sport,” Mr Bulkeley said.
“I’d also like to thank the Minister for going above and beyond in supporting all grassroots sports in Tasmania to get through…

“With the highest level of female participation in the nation, promoting gender equality in football has been a priority for Football…

A short video detailing the offerings of the proposed host venues – Lightwood Park (Kingborough), Valley Road (Devonport) and Churchill Park and Birch Avenue (both Launceston) – has been shown to FIFA representatives, who will soon make a decision on which venues are shortlisted for visiting teams to choose from.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said the prospect of welcoming visiting teams for basecamps was huge for both the sport and…

Football Tasmania has welcomed the launch of the Australian Sports Foundation’s ‘Giving for Sport’ report, which identifies crucial gaps and reveals significant opportunities to increase philanthropic funding for sport.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said sport played a huge role in building strong communities, encouraging potential Tasmanian benefactors to consider sport organisations when next making a charitable donation.
“Giving back to sport is a great way to give back to your community,” Mr Bulkeley said.
“Grassroots sport plays such a huge role in the community,…
Today's Summer Cup saw the Tasmanian football family stand united with Ukraine and its people in a clear 'No to War' message.
The gate today will be donated to those impacted by the conflict, with over $3000 made in total.
Voices around Tasmania have given their support of Football Tasmania and the football family today for our efforts:
The Department of Premier & Cabinet:
"The Tasmanian Government offers our strong support to our local Ukrainian community.Living in one of the safest places on the planet, it is impossible to come to grips with what Ukraine is going…
Buoyed by a blistering start to the second half, South Hobart have rallied back from an early deficit to claim a 3-1 victory over Clarence Zebras in the Women’s Summer Cup Final.
Mia Cane struck twice as South ran over the top of the Zebras, dominating the second half and claiming the first major piece of silverware on offer in 2022.
The opening quarter of an hour was relatively uneventful as both sides took cautious approaches and prioritized defensive solidity. Both sides found little room to play around either penalty area with no clear-cut chances…
A solitary goal from returning Canadian winger Iskander Van Doorne was enough for South Hobart to claim the 2022 NPL Summer Cup with a 1-0 win over the Kingborough Lions at D’arcy Street.
The Lions were made to rue a host of missed opportunities in a game that really should have produced more than the single goal it did given the quality and consistency of scoring chances that flowed throughout it, as South ultimately did enough to hold on and hoist the first trophy on offer in 2022.
It was South who started the sharper of the two sides and twice in the opening ten…
Football Tasmania has congratulated Tasmanian footballer Nathaniel Atkinson for his selection in the latest Socceroos squad for World Cup qualifying matches against Japan and Saudi Arabia.
If Atkinson makes the pitch in either match, he will be the first capped Tasmanian Socceroo since Dominic Longo in 1998, and the first capped Australian representative since Matilda Zoe Nolan in 2002.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley praised the efforts of the former Riverside Olympic player in reaching the highest levels of the game.
“Nathaniel has been a trailblazer for Tasmanian football,…

The Weekend Wash-Up: An Intriguing Opening Weekend
The opening round of the 2022 MyState Women’s Super League is in the book and whilst you never want to overreact to just one weekend’s worth of results, it’s fair to say there was plenty to take away from the opening set of fixtures.
On Friday night it was South Hobart proving far too strong for Olympia and looking every bit a side that is primed to charge up the ladder this season and thrust themselves into the thick of the title race.
Launceston United likewise announced themselves as a major…

The 2022 McDonalds NPL Tasmania season is underway and it’s a familiar-looking group of sides who occupy the top spots on the table after the completion of the Opening Round. South Hobart, Glenorchy Knights and Devonport Strikers all registered thumping wins to start the season to fill the top 3 spots, whilst joining them on the winner’s list were Launceston City. Their clash with the Clarence Zebras was undoubtedly the most entertaining of the week’s action, with City firing back from 3-2 down to claim a stirring 4…

The announcement was made by Member for Lyons Brian Mitchell and Shadow Minister for Sport Don Farrell.
The $500,000 funding is in addition to $1 million Tasmanian Government funding committed as part of the 2020 state election, and will go towards building new changerooms and additional club room facilities.
Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said the funding would help facilitate increased football…
In many respects, the 2021 Men’s season was largely defined by the battle between the Glenorchy Knights and Devonport Strikers. The two produced arguably the most dramatic Lakoseljac Cup final in the history of the competition, with the Strikers winning the see-sawing clash on penalties, before battling out a title race that went all the way down to the final 15 minutes of the season, where the Knights turned the tables and emerged triumphant. So naturally, Round 2 of the McDonald’s NPL Tasmania season is headlined by the…
